So the designers of the great clipper ships of the 1840s and 1850s sharpened the bow and stern, creating much hollower lines than before. The definition of an American clipper ship is a three-masted, full-rigged ship with square sails on each of her three masts that was built for speed rather than capacity. What’s distinctive about a clipper ship as opposed to other types of vessels? These merchants also used variants of the Baltimore clippers as opium runners, smuggling opium into China, thanks to bribes given to Chinese officials who were there to stop the opium trade but, instead, facilitated it. By the 1840s, American merchants doing business in China took these designs and expanded them into China clippers, carrying tea from Canton to New York and, later, Hong Kong. So-called Baltimore clippers, which were built in the Maryland Chesapeake Bay area in the 1810s and 1820s, were used as slave smugglers and privateers. A historian said of the clipper ships: “Illicit and desperate practices followed close in their wake throughout their existence.” Explain what he meant, and what the Americans’ goal was in producing them. When National Geographic caught up with Ujifusa in Washington, D.C., he explained how clipper ship owners reconciled their religious backgrounds with the opium trade, how steamships and the railroad eventually rendered clipper ships obsolete, and how a clipper ship with a female navigator held the record for the fastest voyage from New York to San Francisco right up to the 1980s. But as historian Steven Ujifusa shows in his new book, Barons of the Sea, clipper ships also had a dark side: They serviced the opium trade, which left millions of Chinese addicted, and employed brutal, and sometimes dangerous, methods to make their ships sail faster. Their owners would become some of the richest men in the United States. They revolutionized global trade, ferrying tea from China and delivering provisions and equipment to the burgeoning settlement of Gold Rush-era San Francisco. It does not store any personal data.In their day, they were the fastest ships ever to have been built. viewed_cookie_policy 11 months The cookie is set by the GDPR Cookie Consent plugin and is used to store whether or not user has consented to the use of cookies. However, the BlackShark V2 Pro has no Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to block out unwanted sound, which means it’s better used in a quiet room rather than on a noisy bus. The headset currently sets you back just $200, which all things considered, seems exceptional value considering its potential to be a really great e-sports set features like its 2.4GHz wireless connectivity, comfortable cloth earcup coverings and THX Spatial Audio, are just the kinds of extras pro gamers really want. Additionally, our testing found the H3PRO Hybrid’s microphones were some of the best we’ve heard in a wireless gaming headset, faithfully reproducing voices as they sounded. We were similarly impressed by the headset’s Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) that does a respectable job blocking out ambient noise. After less than three full seasons under Lincoln Riley’s tutelage, Beamer was deemed ready to take the next step in his coaching career, and at one of his top-choice schools no less. He had already picked up crucial experience as a position coach under a pair of all-time greats, but his opportunity in Norman was something quite different: work directly under one of college football’s finest offensive minds and gain a more top-down perspective of coaching. But it was understood from the time he arrived in Norman that it was more of a stepping stone than a true long-term commitment.īeamer was brought on under the title of assistant head coach for this exact purpose. It’s no doubt a bittersweet goodbye, both for Beamer and for the Oklahoma coaching staff which he has helped to anchor for the last three years. ![]() Ten years after departing that position, it was time for Beamer to return to the school that sits less than two hours from his hometown of Charleston. Polux trees: Polux trees sort out pollution themselves when it begins to run rampant, as they will sprout from pollution and slowly cleanse nearby land of pollution.Sending a caravan loaded with waste packs far away to dump them or delivering the waste packs as a gift to an enemy are surefire ways to reduce pollution. Why should we embrace this (IMO) fact about the law, that fair use generally protects tools like chatGPT and Stable Diffusion against copyright liability? Even if we have legitimate concerns about the impacts of these technologies, we should recognize these are not copyright concerns and stand by fair use and the robots’ right to read. Maybe I’m being too glib about the technical legal answer, but in any case, I want to answer a different question. These uses are fair because precedent pretty clearly says they are. The technical legal answer I favor is straightforward, and the very short version is that there’s no meaningful difference between these tools and the other “non-consumptive”/ computational uses that courts have already blessed as fair use many times over. In copyright world – including in some the inevitable raft of lawsuits – the question has been put more narrowly: do these computer tools violate the copyrights of the works that are used to “train” them? Lots of smart people have opined on this already, so I don’t want to go too deeply down this rabbit hole myself. This raises a laundry list of policy questions, some as old as the story of John Henry (will machines put humans out of work?), others as 21st Century as data sovereignty (how can nations govern data pertaining to their citizens when it flows seamlessly around the globe?). ![]() These tools are creating a buzz in part because the works they generate are of sufficient quality that they could pass for or replace the work of humans, at least in some contexts.
